ROBERT P. WILLIAM PAPERS
Robert Williams (1920-1993) received his B.A degree from Dartmouth College in 1942. After service in the U.S. Army (1943-45), he earned M.S. (1946) and Ph.D. (1949) degrees from the University of Chicago. Following two years of teaching at the University of Southern California, he joined the faculty of Baylor College of Medicine in 1951, from which he retired in 1991. Dr. Williams served the American Society for Microbiology in a variety of capacities, which are reflected in the series structure of this collection of papers:
SERIES 1: DIVISIONS, 1971-77
The ASM's Divisions are comprised of members with similar interests in sub-fields of microbiology, and for many years served as the basic programming units for the Society's Annual Meeting. During the latter part of this period, various related Divisions (Divisional Groups) were represented on the Society's governing body, the Council, by a single individual.
Williams served as Secretary, Vice-Chairman and Chairman of the Division of Medical Microbiology and Immunology during the years 1971-73. From 1975-77, he represented Divisional Group I on the ASM Council.
SERIES 2: COUNCIL POLICY COMMITTEE, 1972-81
The Council Policy Committee of ASM is the Executive Board of the Council, and is empowered to act ad interim on its behalf. Dr. Williams served on the CPC from 1972-1985. Folders concerning CPC during Williams' term as President are included in SERIES 4.
SERIES 3: AMERICAN ACADEMY OF MICROBIOLOGY, 1970-1982
The Academy was established in 1956 in order to promote professional recognition, foster the highest scientific and ethical standards among microbiologists, and to serve the science for the benefit of the public. Williams was a charter Fellow of the Academy, and served on the Board of Governors from 1974-77, and was its Chairman from 1976-82.
SERIES 4: PRESIDENTIAL, 1982-1986
Dr. Williams served as President of ASM in 1983-84.
