Add the EndNote Capture Reference Tool to Your Browser

Update: The EndNote Capture Reference Tool has been retired and is no longer available to download. Users who still have the Capture Reference Tool installed will continue to be able to use it. However, it will no longer be supported by EndNote/Clarivate. 


1. Login to EndNote Online

2. Make sure that your browser bookmarks bar is visible (this should be an option in the browser settings - in Chrome it is Bookmarks > Show Bookmarks bar

3. In EndNote, go to the Downloads page

4. Locate the Capture Reference button

5. Click on the button and drag and drop it onto your bookmarks toolbar

Using the Capture Reference Tool

1. Locate a relevant article or other source

2. Click the Capture Reference button in your browser bookmarks

3. Log in with your email address and Endnote password

4. Keep the default to save the citation to my.endnote.com

5. Select the reference type

6. Type in any missing information

7. Select any relevant groups to which to add the reference (if applicable)

8. Select the Save to button

1. Citation will be added to the Unfiled group

2. Close the window
