Reporting Building Maintenance Issues
Submit building maintenance tickets to the “Library-Building-Maintenance” RT.


Honors College

The Honors College, room 216L, is located on the second floor of the library, near the Digital Media Lab.


Seventh (7th) Floor

The conference room and an open space on the seventh floor are reservable spaces for campus wide events. Information about the spaces and how to reserve them can be found here. Library IT Services can be requested to coordinate computing and audio-visual resources for events.


Pondside Offices

The Financial Aid and Scholarships Office and the Office of Undergraduate Admissions and Orientation are located on the pond side in the lower level of the Library. These offices are part of the Library building proper, but can only be accessed by the public through the pond side entrances.

Lockers
Lockers, located on floors 3 - 7 of the Library, are available for semester or daily check out. Daily locker keys can be checked out at the Check Out Desk. To reserve a locker for the entire semester, see the locker information page, and fill out the online application: https://library.umbc.edu/studyrooms/lockers/

 

Study Rooms
We have first-come first-serve study rooms for quiet individual study, reservable study rooms for individuals or groups, and some just for faculty members. For more information, see Study Spaces and Lockers.

There are five locations in the library that the public can reserve.


Board Room & Gallery (Room #767)
Open Area (Conference Room #750)
President's Room (Room #768)
Gallery Presentation Space (1st floor)
Atrium (Library Entrance)

AOK Library Guidelines

The following guidelines govern the use of the facilities and collections. Guidelines have several functions in this organization.

  • Their statements help define the values of this organization, and they help managers and staff translate those values into service priorities.
  • Guidelines establish a standard for services that can be understood by users of the service and providers.
  • Guidelines ensure equitable treatment for all, and provide a framework for delivery of services.

Tour

While leading tour, be sure to introduce new hire to members of each department, as they are available. Refer to the Staff Directory and Organizational Chart.

Gallery:

The Gallery sponsors lectures, symposia, and tours in connection with its exhibitions. 

RLC and Atrium:

These areas are open 24 hours a day 365 days a year. Access to the RLC is restricted to those with an active UMBC ID card.

Circulation:

This department is responsible for opening and closing of the building and maintaining the circulating collection. They also check out books, media, and some equipment. Course reserves and Interlibrary Loan items are also picked up here. 

Reference Desk:

Main service desk for the Reference Department. Librarians and staff answer research questions in person, through chat and RT, and phone calls. Hours may differ from general building hours.

Academic Success Center: Writing Center and Math & Science Tutoring

The Writing Center and Math & Science Tutoring (and some language tutoring) are located near the printing area on the first floor. 

Technical Services/Cataloging:

Located in the back working area behind the RLC. Responsible for all of the metadata, cataloging, and library technical services for the library.

Accounting and Receiving:

Also located in the back working area, responsible for all accounting and receiving for library departments. 

Interlibrary Loan:

Located in the first floor back working area. This department processes all patron requests for materials not owned by UMBC (except for USMAI book requests, which are processed through Circulation).

Digital Media Lab:

Located on the second floor, the DML has a wide array of digital and technical equipment available for the campus community. Some is available for checkout, while the recording booth and AV studio are reservable.

Serials:

Located on the second floor. This department is responsible for all journals, microfilm, and microfiche. 

LITS:

Library IT Services are located on the second floor. They are responsible for all in house computing and technology.

Administrative offices:

Located on the third floor. The director of the library, head of business services, the library's payroll preparer, and administrative staff are located in these offices. 

 

Honors College:

Located on the second floor, the Honors College is an academic scholars program. 

7th Floor Event Space:

This space is frequently used by both the library and the broader campus community for events and programs. 

President's Lounge:

This private lounge is located behind the 7th floor event space. You may receive questions about events held in this space. 

Financial Aid and Scholarships:

This department is located in the Library building, but it is only accessible by exiting the front doors and taking the stairs down to the pond level.

Office of Undergraduate Admissions and Orientation:

Located next to the Office of Financial Aid and Scholarship.  It is also in the Library building, but only accessible by exciting the front doors and taking the stairs down to the pond level.
