Guidelines from the Chicago Style Manual also state that proper citation of ChatGPT and other GenAI tools is required when you have used them in your work(s):

On the other hand, if you are citing the generated content as a footnote or an endnote, the AI tool's name should be listed as the "author," and the developer or company as the publisher or sponsor. Next, include the date when the text or work was generated, then the URL to the AI tool:

If any language you've included in your paper has been edited or paraphrased in any way from GenAI texts, this must be mentioned and acknowledged in the body of your work, or at the end of the paraphrased sentence or paragraph.
For in-text parenthetical citations, the Chicago Manual recommends the following format:
"(Name of AI Tool, Month, Day, Year when content was generated)"

It is not necessary to cite ChatGPT or other GenAI tools in a bibliography or reference list, unless you can provide a publicly available URL link where readers can access your prompt(s) and chat(s). For more information, visit the Chicago Manual's guidelines for citing GenAI tools such as ChatGPT.
