Comics in Special Collections

War Comics

War comics feature stories of wartime battles and and adventures. They gained popularity after World War II, although there was also propaganda comics about war before that. UMBC's Special Collections features a number of war comics, including the one listed below.

 U.S.A. is Ready!- 1941

A one-off comic published by Dell Comics, this is a fantastic example of the comic book as propaganda.  There’s no plot- it’s mostly pictures and descriptions of US military armaments, vehicles, and uniforms.  It’s hard to tell if this was meant to excite children for the coming of World War II, or appear imposing to foreign forces who were at that point potential enemies.

Our Army at War: 1960s and 70s

Very few comics during the Vietnam era actually focused on that conflict. Most, like this one, rehashed stories from World War II and the Korean War.  Featuring Sgt. Rock and Easy Company, this series offers super-realistic (for the time) art and a patriotic vision of the American soldier.
