Comics in Special Collections

The UMBC Comics Collection

Want to read some Batman? Jiving for some Archie? UMBC’s Special Collections holds over 6,500 comic books! Featuring a variety of genres, from superhero comics to underground comix, this collection will have something for every comic book fan.

Highlights include more than 200 back issues of the original Thor comic books dating from 1965 through 1990. The collection also includes more than a hundred issues of The Avengers from the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s.  And before you ask, yes, we’ve got classic 60’s and 70’s issues of Captain America, the Incredible Hulk and Iron Man!

This guide, which is arranged by comic genre, provides some guidance to the larger collection. It should be noted that this is not a comprehensive list, but rather just a sampling of the comics in Special Collections.

Want to see if we have the comic you’re interested in reading? You can search for comics in our online catalog. Please note that in the catalog, comics are organized by title only and not subject, author, or artist.

Want to read any of these comics? Special Collections is open Monday through Friday from 1-4pm, with extended hours from 1-8pm on Thursdays. Other hours are available by appointment.
