About

The mission of the Center for Biological Sciences Archives (CBSA) is to identify, preserve, and provide access to manuscripts, personal papers, and archives generated by individuals and institutions involved in the biological sciences. In addition the CBSA will encourage research, scholarship, and publication of writings on the history, policy implications, and social and cultural impact of the biological sciences. Public programs concerning the archives will be featured in the future as the archives and its activities are developed.

Access to the collections is available though the Special Collections department in the Albin O. Kuhn Library & Gallery.

Center for Biological Sciences Archives

American Society for Microbiology Archives and Library

Also located at UMBC is the Center for History of Microbiology / American Society for Microbiology Archives and Library. The CHM/ASM Archives house the records of the Society from its founding in 1899 to the present and various collections relating to the history of microbiology. Finding aids and information about their holdings may be found on the ASM website. Other collections available include the International Union of Microbiological Societies, the Anne Sayre Collection of Rosalind Franklin materials, and the Rita Colwell papers.

CBSA Collections

American Association of Anatomists records
Coverage: Index Only
This collection documents the history of the American Association of Anatomists. Contains awards, committee files, planning files for the annual meeting, Experimental Biology, financial documents, membership lists, AAA publications, and historic photographs.
American Association of Immunologists (AAI) records
Coverage: Index Only
This collection of records of the American Association of Immunologists documents the Association's activities primarily from 1941-1992. The correspondence, reports, minutes, newsletters, programs, etc. provide a view of the Association's later years.
American Genetic Association (AGA) records
Contains organizational records and print journals from the American Genetic Association. Includes financial reports, Council meeting minutes, bylaws, annual reports, publication records, membership files and lists, clippings, conference and symposia documents, and materials relating to the 2001 Anthrax scare are included.
American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (ASBMB) records

This collection of records of the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (ASBMB) documents the society from its founding in 1906 through the present. This collection includes meetings, publications, correspondence, committees.
American Society for Cell Biology (ASCB) records
Coverage: Index Only
The records of the ASCB document the history of the society beginning with its initial organization in 1961. Correspondence, meeting minutes, agendas, reports, accounting & membership files provide a view of the Society's interests and activities.
American Type Culture Collection records
Contains publications from the American Type Culture Collection's history, including the first volumes of the American Type Culture Collection Catalog.
Biophysical Society records
Coverage: Index Only
This collection of records of the Biophysical Society documents the founding of the society in Columbus, Ohio in 1957, the development of the Biophysical Journal and other publications and its growth up to the present day.
Carl Baker oral history interviews
Contains twenty-four transcripts from oral history interviews conducted by Dr. Carl Baker with scientists at the National Cancer Institute, Cancer Viruses Research Programs, National Institutes of Health. Interviewees include: Dr. Norman Anderson, Dr. John Bader, Dr. Carl Baker, Dr. Nathaniel Berlin, Dr. Charles Boone, Dr. Robert Depue, Dr. James Duff, Dr. Robert Gallo, Dr. Giovanni Gori, Dr. Janet Hartley, Dr. Samuel Herman, Dr. Robert Holdenried, Dr. Gary Kelloff, Dr. Ruth Kirschstein, Dr. Robert Manaker, Mr. Gerry Meyer, Dr. Robert Miller, Dr. Bayard Morrison, Dr. Marvin Schneiderman, Dr. Lou Sibal, Dr. Robert Stevenson, Dr. Harold Varmus, Dr. William Walter, and Dr. Gordon Zubrod.
International Union of Immunological Societies (IUIS) records

The records of the IUIS document the history of the Union beginning with its initial organization in 1969 to the present. The records are arranged in five series: Officers & Council, Membership, Meetings, Committees, and Affiliated Organizations.
Keith Porter papers
Contains materials relating to UMBC faculty member Professor Keith Porter. Includes lab records, experiment notes, research papers, notebooks, photographic prints, microscopic photographs and slides, glass negatives, glass prints, microscopes, awards, certificates, correspondence, personal and professional photographs, and materials relating to Porter's professional association affiliations.
Margaret Reed Lewis microscope
This microscope was produced by Carl Zeiss and belonged to American physiologist Margaret Adaline Reed Lewis (1881-1970).
R.D. Allen film and videotape collection
Contains films and video recordings from R.D. Allen's research library. Includes footage provided by other scientisits regarding their research as well as films made by Allen. Includes 100 16mm films, approximately 500 16mm films, 438 3/4" videocassettes.
Rita Colwell papers
Collection consists of the personal and research papers of Rita Colwell relating to Colwell's time as a microbiology professor at the University of Maryland, College Park and her work with the founding of the Maryland Biotechnology Institute.
Society for Developmental Biology records
Coverage: Index Only
This collection contains the organizational records for the Society of Developmental Biology, including documents relating to committees, members and membership, finances, meetings and conferences, awards, publications, and affiliated associations.
Society for Industrial Microbiology (SIM) records
This finding aid of the records of the Society for Industrial Microbiology covers the years beginning in 1949, with birth of the Society, through its development and growth up to 2001. Records include correspondence, minutes, reports.
Society for Invertebrate Pathology records
The Society for Invertebrate Pathology records date from 1954 to 2012; they contain early documents relating to the founding of the society, society publications, papers and records belonging to society members, photographs, meeting and seminar materials, and interview recordings.
Society of Protozoologists records
Coverage: Index Only
The collection documents the development and growth of the Society of Protozoloogists from its founding in 1947 to 1994. The records are organized by Society history, Executive Committee records, membership, meetings, publications & affiliated societies. In 2005 the membership voted to change the name to International Society of Protistologists.
Tissue Culture Association records
Coverage: Index Only
Finding Aid to the Tissue Culture Association. The finding aid includes the documents and records of the TCA from its founding in 1946 to 1986. Documents include correspondence, meeting minutes, publications, reports, and other society activities. In 1994 the membership voted to change the name to Society for In Vitro Biology.
