LGBTQ+ Resources in Bafford, Rosenfeld, and APC Collections

What is the importance of using photographs as LGBTQ+ research material? Photographs are more personal and often narrative. Many of the photobooks chosen below are accompanied by storytelling and interviews that give insight to a multiplicity of queer experiences. You are not just looking at a photo, you are watching a story, part of a long and ongoing history, unfold within a specific time period and social context. The photobooks below are just a fraction of what constitutes the Bafford collection and represent a range of genders, sexualities, and cultures.

Science fiction and fantasy break the boundaries of what is possible- it forces you to rethink normative realities, relationships, and power structures. Likewise, queerness is often explored in fiction as a utopia with endless possibilities of expression. Sci-fi takes from the world around it while also transforming how we think about social issues, often predicting or informing our modern society. Thus, it’s important that queerness is included in that future vision. In highlighting queer identities in science fiction and fantasy books below, the goal is to normalize queer futures and explore the infinite possibilities for queer identity.
