The first step in anti-racist work begins at the individual level with self-awareness, self-criticism, and self-examination. Instructors who wish to enact anti-racist teaching might begin by thinking about course materials and content, as well as their own actions and designing course materials and content to become intentionally and explicitly anti-racist.
"Washing one's hands of the conflict between the powerful and the powerless means to side with the powerful, not to be neutral."
-Paulo Freire, From the Politics of Education (1985)
